Atlantic City fire captain catches suspect burglarizing home

  • News

An Atlantic City fire captain got a taste of the police side of public safety when he interrupted a burglar at his home Wednesday.
Fire Capt. Silvester Fonville returned to his home in the 400 block of Delta Avenue just after 1 p.m. to find his front door busted wide open and see a man coming down his stairs with some of his belongings, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
The suspect, Richard Barber, and Fonville got into an altercation, according to the report. Fonville was able to subdue Barber and call police.
Officers responded and took Barber into custody.
Fonville's property was recovered, including some items in Barber's pockets, Fair said.
Barber was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus with injuries from the confrontation. They are not considered life-threatening.
He was later taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility, where his mugshot shows him with a bandaged head and what appears to be injuries to his eye, nose and mouth.
Fonville was not injured.
Barber, 52, of Pleasantville, is charged with burglary, robbery, criminal attempt theft, and two contempt of court warrants.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Atlantic City Police Department at 609-347-5766. Information may also be texted anonymously to tip411 (847411) beginning the text with ACPD.
