Mays Landing man charged in death of infant son

  • News

A Hamilton Township man is charged in the death of his 4 month-old son, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said.
Police responded to a Jan. 29 call to the Mays Landing home on Hoover Drive for an unresponsive child, and found the boy had no pulse.
He was rushed to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s Mainland Campus in Galloway Township. Because of the severity of his injuries, he was then transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, or CHOP.
Jose Rojas, 35, told police that the baby rolled off the bed, which was about two feet high.
But doctors at CHOP said that for a fall to have caused such significant trauma, it would have had to be from at least 30 feet.
The baby died from his injuries Feb. 4.
An investigation showed that Rojas was home alone with his three young children at the time of the incident.
Doctors from CHOP stated that the child suffered hemorrhages in both eyes that were too numerous to count the number, Tyner said. The pattern of hemorrhages was consistent with severe trauma, specifically abusive head trauma, doctors said.
Rojas is charged with first degree aggravated manslaughter, second degree aggravated assault and second degree endangering the welfare of a child.
Rojas is jailed on the charges.
Hamilton Township Police Detective Larry Fernan is the lead investigator on the case. Assistant Prosecutor Dave Ruffenach is representing the state.
