  • News

An Atlantic City man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted his girflriend inside his vehicle and then dragged her down the road after she tried to escape.
Police were called to New Hampshire and Atlantic avenues just before 5 p.m. Monday for the report of a woman lying in the road, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
Officer Bryan O’Neill arrived to find the 41-year-old Atlantic City woman in the middle of the street with numerous injuries, according to the report.
She had been inside a vehicle with her boyfriend, Daniel Martinez, when he started to assault her, according to the report.
The woman, whose name is not being released due to the nature of the attack, was able to get out of the car, but as she leaned back in to grab her things, Martinez sped off dragging her with him as she held on to the vehicle, Fair said.
Once she was dislodged from the vehicle, she fell to the ground, and Martinez sped away, Fair said.
She was taken to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Officer Malik Tolbert found Martinez in his parked vehicle on the north block of Vermont Avenue, Fair said. He was taken into custody without incident.
Martinez, 31, was intoxicated at the time, according to the charges.
He was charged with aggravated assault, vehicular aggravated assault, and numerous motor vehicles summonses, including driving while intoxicated.
Martinez had his first court appearance Wednesday, via video from the Atlantic County Justice Facility. The judge told him, via Spanish interpreter, that the prosecutor was requesting a detention hearing to have him held pending trial. That is scheduled for Thursday.
Martinez is "proficient in English," said public defender Ray Lee, but the interpreter was brought in just to make sure he understood everything.
