Smashed windows, crashed cars and a stabbing marked a busy Monday night for an Atlantic City family that wound up charged with several crimes.
The DeBerrys’ arrests didn’t stop their battle, with the family continuing to fight in the lobby of the Public Safety Building, police said Wednesday.
One member is still wanted by police.
There were several incidents involving the family throughout the city Monday, including two in which Delisha DeBerry allegedly smashed out windows, first in a car and then at a family home, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
Officers first responded to a fight in the area of Ohio and East Riverside avenues just after 6 p.m., according to the report.
Delisha DeBerry had gone to the home of her sister Demaris DeBerry to fight, Officer Robert Reynolds was told.
When Demaris refused, Delisha smashed out the back window of her sister’s car, Fair said. Delisha left, with Demaris following in the car, Fair said.
Police were called to the fight that followed.
Officers then responded to the 100 block of North Delaware Avenue at 6:51 p.m. for a fight between several of the DeBerrys, Fair said.
During the altercation, Delisha smashed a back window of the residence, and then left before police arrived, according to the report.
Delisha DeBerry was later charged with two counts of criminal mischief, and issued a summons with a future court date.
A motor vehicle crash then brought patrol officers to Mississippi and Hamilton avenues at 7:17 p.m.
There, they found Dashima DeBerry had allegedly attempted to crash her car into Demaris’ car, but lost control. She then jumped the curb and crashed into a stop sign on the sidewalk, Fair said.
When Dashima and the passenger got out of the car, Demaris tried to run them over, according to the report.
Demaris’ passenger, Douglas DeBerry, then got out of the car with a baseball bat and struck Dashima’s windshield, also hitting her unnamed passenger in the face with the bat, Fair said.
The victim was treated on scene by ambulance personnel.
Demaris and Douglas fled before officers arrived.
Officer Nick Grasso located Demaris back on Delaware Avenue and took her into custody without incident. Demaris Deberry, 28, was charged with assault by auto. While at the Public Safety Building, officers were alerted to an altercation between members of the DeBerry family in the lobby. There, they found Douglas in a hospital gown. It was later learned that he just left AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus, after Dashima stabbed him after the bat attack, Fair said. Demaris dropped him off at the medical center for treatment before Grasso found her and arrested her. Reynolds, who had responded to each incident, took Douglas into custody. Douglas DeBerry, 20, was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and criminal mischief. Both he and Demaris were taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility. Dashima DeBerry, 21, of Absecon, was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and assault by auto. She is wanted by police.
