Mayor, councilman still have not received complaints in alleged fight

  • News
Mayor Frank Gilliam and City Councilman Jeffree Fauntleroy still have not yet received that complaints against them alleging assault and harassment in an altercation with three employees of the Haven Nightclub inside the Golden Nugget. The two at first denied anything physical had occurred, but video shows Gilliam hitting a man and Fauntleroy throwing another man to the ground. Fauntleroy said Monday night he still had not received official notice that a complaint was filed, but had news media camped outside his door all day. Video of the altercation is expected to part of an investigation. The Golden Nugget turned over the footage to detectives Monday morning, a source at the casino confirmed. The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office is now handling the case. First Assistant Prosecutor Cary Shill said in a statement Sunday night that the office was looking into the matter. But no further comment has come from the office. The casino had allowed media to view the camera footage without recording it. But after investigators came Monday morning, the video was no longer being shown. Fauntleroy has told BreakingAC that an altercation began inside the nightclub, and that the two men were leaving when they were followed outside. That is where the video apparently picks up. It was not clear whether there is any video from inside the club showing what may have happened there. Questions about the existence of such video have gone unanswered. "But the video shows what actually happened," Fauntleroy told BreakingAC. "Unfortunately, a lot of times when we go out to have just a good time and be socializing and enjoy ourselves, we are targeted and we are provoked into situations."

Gilliam has not replied to repeated requests for comment since the video came to light. He originally denied anything happened at Haven "beside people having a verbal disagreement." "What do I look like as the mayor of a city assaulting anyone?" he added. Three employees — two men and a woman — filed complaints against the two. The man Fauntleroy hit was sent to the hospital, according to a witness. The alleged victim did not respond to a request for comment. Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver, who oversees the city as part of the takeover, issued a statement Monday,
the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. "The allegations are troubling and we understand law enforcement is looking into it," she said in the statement. "We are committed to continued progress in Atlantic City and are working to make sure that happens."
