Hammonton man accused of sexually assaulting teen

  • News

A Hammonton man accused of sexually assaulting a teen was released with conditions last week.
Mauricio Ocampio, 21, was arrested after the girl's mother found a pregnancy test and the now-15-year-old girl told her that the two were in a sexual relationship
The victim was 13 when Ocampio first texted her on Snapchat and "expressed interest in her," according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Over the next several months, Ocampio sent the girl explicit photos and videos through Snapchat and Instagram.
Then, in July 2019, he told the then-14-year-old to sneak out of her house and meet him in his sister's vehicle, the affidavit states.
While the girl told him "she was scared and wanted to go home," Ocampio sexually assaulted her, telling her "to relax" when she said it hurt and asked him to stop, the affidavit states.
The assaults allegedly continued, including four times at the girl's home and once in a trailer on the property of a Hammonton business.
A week after the last encounter in July, Ocampio allegedly told the girl to erase everything from her phone after someone "approached him as a party regarding his relationship with" the victim.
While the girl did erase the images, she was able to recover some to show police, the affidavit states.
The girl's brothers confronted Ocampio, who said it was a mistake that only happened once two years ago.
Ocampio apologized to the girl's father and brothers in a cell phone call intercepted by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
In the call, he "kept saying that he was sorry and didn't want to talk over the phone."
He now faces 17 charges, including six counts of sexual assault and eight counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
During a detention hearing last week, attorney Lou Barbone argued for release, pointing out that Ocampio has no criminal history and the public safety assessment used to help determine detention under bail reform recommended his release.
Ocampio works full-time and lives with his girlfriend and their infant daughter.
Superior Court Judge DeLury found that the state's evidence was enough to increase Ocampio's oversight upon release but not to hold him.
He must report weekly and cannot leave Atlantic County except for work or any medical appointments. He cannot have contact with the victim or her family.
Ocampio is due back in court Sept. 16 before Judge Donna Taylor.
