Vineland man ordered held in Atlantic City shooting

  • News

A Cumberland County man accused in an Atlantic City shooting was ordered held in jail Wednesday.
Andre Alexander, 35, of Vineland, was arrested Saturday, after an investigation by the Violent Crimes Unit into the Aug. 3 shooting led to charges against him.
Alexander is accused of a shooting a 22-year-old Philadelphia man from the passenger seat of a car as it drove from the 3100 block of Pacific Avenue.
The city's audio gunshot-detection system, ShotSpotter, recorded six shots.
The victim walked into the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus with a gunshot wound, according to the initial report.
He later told police that he punched the "heavyset black man" through the car's passenger window. The suspect then took a gun from a satchel around his neck and shot, Assistant Prosecutor Rick McKelvey told the judge.
Surveillance video shows a man matching Alexander's description and with what appears to be a satchel around his neck getting into the vehicle that was later part of the shooting, McKelvey said.
But defense attorney Lauren Musarra said the passenger cannot be identified and that Alexander strongly denies he was involved.
She also noted that the shooting victim was admittedly "highly intoxicated" at the time and could not give a good description.
The driver of the vehicle told police he didn't know who the passenger in his vehicle was.
Alexander failed to show up to court Oct. 1, in a Cumberland County case, according to information presented in court used to prove him a flight risk. He told the judge that he was not aware of the court date, and would have been there if he had known.
Alexander is charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and certain person not to possess a weapon.
He will remain the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Violent Crimes Unit at 609-347-5766. Information may also be texted anonymously to tip411 (847411) beginning the text with ACPD.
