Weymouth man held in beating of neighbor, attack on police

  • News

A Weymouth man accused of beating his neighbor, threatening the property manager and battling police was ordered held in jail Tuesday.
Gilberto Baez Jr., 33, went to his neighbor’s apartment Oct. 9, telling him, “I have a problem with you,” before forcing his way inside, according to the affidavit read at his detention hearing.
The unnamed victim is mentally challenged or has a handicap, according to the charges.
After the victim shoved Baez against a wall, Baez allegedly pushed the man to the floor and pushed him several time in the face, causing bruising and lacerations.
Baez then left the apartment and barricaded himself inside his home, refusing to come out when police arrived, according to the charges.
When the property manager came to unlock the door, Baez allegedly yelled, “You’re next, b—-!”
Baez punched officers who forced their way in, the affidavit states.
While he was being cuffed, Baez allegedly scratched one officer’s neck and struck another several times.
At the station, he shouted at officers and stomped on the ground, the affidavit states.
Baez was already on pretrial monitoring out of Camden County at the time of the incident.
He had has 10 failures to appear in court, including two this year, according to his pre-sentencing assessment, which called for no release.
He scored a six out of six for failure to appear and a five out of six for likelihood to commit another crime, according to the PSA, which helps in determining detention under bail reform.
Baez appeared via video from the jail where he was in a green vest used for inmates on mental health watch.
Baez has 12 pending charges.
“The defendant’s criminality appears to be escalating,” Superior Court Judge Pam D’Arcy said before ordering him held in jail. “He poses a danger to the community, especially this victim.”
