Atlantic City road rage incident leads to loaded gun

  • News

A road rage incident let to the arrest of a Philadelphia man with a loaded gun outside the Atlantic City police station, according to charges.

Eric Carmichael, 60, is in jail awaiting a detention hearing after he was stopped outside the Clayton G. Graham Public Safety Building with a handgun in his vehicle, police said.

The alleged victim came to the police station saying he was driving in the city with his family Saturday, when a man in a white Toyota Tacoma started following him throughout the city.

At one point, the suspect brandished a handgun in a threatening manner, the unnamed victim told police.

Sgt. Gary Holmes left the building with the victim, who pointed out the suspect vehicle stopped at a red light at California and Atlantic avenues, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.

A motor vehicle stop was initiated, and Carmichael was detained for an investigation, which led to the gun found in the vehicle fitted with a high-capacity magazine, according to the report.

Carmichael appeared briefly before Judge Nancy Ridgeway on Tuesday, when he was told there would be a detention hearing Thursday.

He told the judge that he is the sole caretaker for a disabled relative who is also 60. He said the man lives in Philadelphia and is on oxygen and has high doses of daily insulin for his diabetes.

Ridgeway said she would alert police to do a wellness check for the man.

Carmichael is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a high-capacity magazine, four counts of aggravated assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
