Teen recorded Absecon driving instructor groping her, affidavit states

  • News

A teen recorded her driving instructor as he groped her following a lesson, according to the affidavit in the case.

Jay Vyas, 69, of Egg Harbor Township, was arrested last week, shortly after the lesson.

Vyas picked the 16-year-old girl up at her home Thursday for a two-hour driving lesson with Mainstream Driving School out of Absecon, according to the charges.

While the girl was driving, Vyas “rubbed (her) leg and back, which made her feel uncomfortable,” reads the affidavit obtained by BreakingAC.

At the end of the lesson, Vyas had the girl drive back to his office, telling her he needed to get the certificate of completion for the course, according to the affidavit.

Because of the defendant’s previous actions, the girl decided to record on her telephone.

Video on the phone shows the defendant standing face-to-face with the girl while she was up against a wall, the detective wrote.

“The phone is then moved next to the victim’s pants,” he writes.

It was during that time that the girl said Vyas was hugging her and grabbing her breasts.

Vyas can be heard asking the girl, “Do you like it?” on the recording, the detective wrote.

“What?” the girls asks.

“What I’m doing,” Vyas responds.

“No,” she replies.

“OK, then I won’t do it,” he says, and walks to his desk, according to the report.

The girl then turns the phone to show her hand shaking, the detective wrote.

“The defendant then told the victim if she didn’t like him holding her, just say she doesn’t like it,” the affidavit states.

Vyas then apologized to the victim, gave her the paperwork and drove her home, it reads.

The victim immediately told her family what happened, and they went to the police and filed a report.

Vyas is charged criminal sexual contact, endangering the welfare of a child and harassment.

He was arrested Thursday, and taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility. He was released the next day, since the Prosecutor’s Office did not file to have him detained.

Vyas is still listed as the lead instructor on the school’s website with his phone number.
