Three-vehicle crash in Egg Harbor Township traps Somers Point driver in car

  • News

A three-car crash hospitalized three people and detoured traffic for four hours in Egg Harbor Township early Thursday morning.

Donald Defeo was heading south on Ocean Heights Avenue just before 6 a.m., when he crossed over the center line and crashed into an oncoming sedan driven by Zachary Lantin, Lt. Larry Graham said.

Defeo's BMW then spun counterclockwise, and crashed into an SUV Human Services police vehicle driven by Robert Penven.

Defeo, 41, of Somers Point, was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters from Bargaintown and Scullville's fire companies.

Egg Harbor and Hamilton Township EMS responded and treated all three drivers.

Defeo was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus in Atlantic City for injuries not considered life-threatening, Graham said.

Lantin, 29, and Penven, 54, both of the township, were taken to local hospitals for minor injuries, according to the report.

The crash is being investigated by Officers Thomas Rizzotte Jr., Patrick Daly, Robert Moran and Kevin Brady.

Traffic on Ocean Heights Avenue was diverted for about four hours while the scene was being investigated and cleared.

Charges are pending the completion of the investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call the Egg Harbor Township Traffic Safety Unit at 609-926-4045.
