Grant to help JFS service Atlantic, Cape Holocaust survivors

  • Community

A grant will help serve Holocaust survivors in Atlantic and Cape May counties.

Jewish Family Services received $204,497 from the Claims Conference that will aid essential programs and services to the 20 survivors living locally, including homecare, case management, emergency financial assistance, Kosher meals, transportation and socialization programs.

“At JFS, we are honored and dedicated to taking care of Holocaust survivors in our county,” CEO Andrea Steinberg said. “Our staff is committed to providing essential support, which hopefully immeasurably adds to their quality of life as they age with grace, dignity and independence.”

The Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, or Claims Conference was founded in 1951 by representatives of 23 major international Jewish organizations.

It negotiates for and disburses funds to individuals and organizations, along with seeking the return of Jewish property stolen during the Holocaust.

“The care and support of Holocaust survivors is not just our mission as an organization, it is our moral duty," said Greg Schneider, executive vice president of the Claims Conference. "We are proud to support the great work being done by JFS ensuring that survivors in their area are being cared for in their homes with the dignity that was stripped from them in their youth.”

The Claims Conference will distribute about $888 million in grants this year to more than 300 social service agencies worldwide, supporting more than 115,000 Holocaust survivors.
