An Atlantic City man who was beaten unconscious by a fellow Atlantic County jail inmate in 2022 has died.
Hassan Robinson, 44, was left paralyzed and unable to speak after the brutal Sept. 13, 2022, attack inside a holding cell, which was captured on video.
"We all quit our jobs to take care of him," Robinson's sister Khalima Robinson said, adding that she, niece Nahasia Robinson and nephew Chris Leslie "nursed him until the day he died.
Another sister, Bettina Robinson, was in charge of all his doctors.
"He didn't deserve to die the way he did," good friend Misty Gullo said. "No one does."
A funeral is set for noon Aug. 23 at Mikal's Funeral Parlor at 30 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Atlantic City. A viewing will begin at 11 a.m.
No motive was ever given as to why Shakur Aabid allegedly attacked Robinson as they were brought to the same holding cell for court appearances.
Surveillance shows Shakur Aabid strike Robinson, then “continuously punch(ing) Robinson in the face,” according to the affidavit previously reported by BreakingAC. “Robinson immediately falls down on a bench as Aabid continues to punch and kick him. As Robinson falls to the floor, Aabid continues to stomp on his head and face repeatedly.”
At one point, Robinson apparently ends up under the bench. But that did not stop Aabid, the detective wrote.
“Aabid pulls Robinson out from underneath the bench, repositions him, and continues to stomp his head and face with his right foot as Robinson lays unconscious,” the affidavit states.
When Aabid was done, he “walked up to the cell door, turned around and placed his hands behind his back for the responding officers."
Aabid, now 29, is charged with attempted murder.
The charge could be upgraded to murder pending autopsy results, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office told BreakingAC.
Aabid was in the jail at the time on charges connected to a carjacking. He allegedly pistol-whipped a man and stole his car April 3, 2022, outside the New York Deli at 649 N. New York Ave.
Since that time, further investigations led to additional cases, including an attack March 28, 2022, that left a teenage girl unconscious.
Aabid, who is listed as Abid in the previous charges, is due in court later this month on a total of eight cases, according to court records.
He is jailed in Mercer County, where he was transferred Dec. 20, 2022. It was not clear exactly why.
Robinson's suffered significant injuries, as show in this photo previously provided by his family.
