Affidavit details brutal beating inside Atlantic County jail cell

  • Crime-Courts

An Atlantic County jail inmate brutally beat another inmate, stomping on the victim’s head even after he was unconscious on the floor, according to a report obtained by BreakingAC.

Shakur Aabid, 28, is charged with attempted murder in the Sept. 13 attack, which was captured on video surveillance inside the jail.

The Major Crimes Unit was called to the Atlantic County Justice Facility for a serious assault, according to the affidavit.

Video shows Hassan Robinson, 42, walk up to the cell door to get in line with other inmates for a meal, the affidavit states.

“Aabid, who is sitting down, then stands to strike Robinson when he is not looking,” the narrative reads.

Aabid “continuously punches Robinson in the face,” it continues. “Robinson immediately falls down on a bench as Aabid continues to punch and kick him. As Robinson falls to the floor, Aabid continues to stomp on his head and face repeatedly.”

At one point, Robinson apparently ends up under the bench. But that did not stop Aabid, the detective writes.

“Aabid pulls Robinson out from underneath the bench, repositions him, and continues to stomp his head and face with his right foot as Robinson lays unconscious,” the affidavit reads.

When Aabid was done, he “walked up to the cell door, turned around and placed his hands behind his back for the responding officers,” it says.

Aabid was in the jail on charges connected to a carjacking, BreakingAC has learned.

Aabid, who is listed as Abid in the previous charges, allegedly pistol-whipped a man and stole his car April 3, outside the New York Deli at 649 N. New York Ave.

The victim told police he was walking outside the store when a man, later identified as Aabid, started asking him questions. The victim tried to walk away but Aabid continued, eventually pulling out a handgun and telling the unnamed victim “to give him everything that (the victim) had on him,” the affidavit in that case reads.

When the man refused, Aabid assaulted him with the gun, took the keys and drove off in the man’s vehicle.

Aabid was arrested three days later when an officer recognized him as the man wanted described as having a blue tattoo on his forehead. Video surveillance confirmed he was the drive of the stolen vehicle, the affidavit states.

Both men are from Atlantic City.
