Pleasantville man who allegedly ripped baton from A.C. officer's belt will have detention hearing

  • News
A Pleasantville man who allegedly assaulted Atlantic City officers twice in the past three months will have a detention hearing next week. Jalial Whitted, 33, had his first appearance in court Thursday on charges he ripped an Atlantic City police officer’s baton from his belt, breaking the weapon. Police had to use a taser Tuesday to get Whitted to drop the baton that he was “swinging toward the officer in an aggressive manner,” according to the police report. Less than three months ago, Whitted allegedly injured an officer and assaulted an emergency medical technician after he was found walking the sidewalk disoriented and then began screaming and growling at officers trying to help him. https://breakingac.com/ac-man-assaulted-officer-emt-while-on-narcotics-police-say/ Whitted was given a summons at that time. But on Tuesday, he was arrested. And on Thursday, he learned during a brief court appearance via video from the jail that the prosecutor has made a motion to have him held pending trial. Municipal Court Judge Mark Mosca told Whitted that his public safety assessment puts him at the highest risk — a six out of six for likelihood to commit another crime and a six out of six for failure to appear. He also is flagged for violence. “I never failed to appear for none of my court dates,” Whitted told him. Mosca said that would be something the public defender representing him at the hearing would deal with. At the start of his proceeding, Whitted told the judge that the Atlantic City address on his charges was never a place he lived. He currently is a resident of Sassafras Run in Pleasantville.
