An Atlantic City man charged assaulting police officers and an emergency medical technician in January is now charged with ripping an officer’s baton from his duty belt.

Officers George Mancuso, Wahab Malik and Ryan Kov were called to Virginia and Atlantic avenues at about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a man walking in traffic.
They couldn’t find the man when they arrived, but a resident stopped them and said a man was lying in the roadway at Pennsylvania and Atlantic avenues, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
The officers found Jalial Whitted, 33, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and narcotics, according to the report.
Officers called an ambulance to have Whitted evaluated and positioned their cars so that no one would strike him, Fair said.
Whitted became increasingly agitated as the officers tried to talk to him, and he attempted to crawl toward traffic, and then began moaning loudly, according to the report.
It was likely a familiar scene for Kov, who was involved in a Jan. 19 incident, when he and Officer Bryan O’Neill were called to Michigan and Pacific avenues, where Whitted had been sitting in traffic, according to the report at that time.

At that time, Whitted also appeared under the influence and yelled and growled at officers, eventually grabbing and pushing O’Neill, who was injured in the arrest.
This time, Whitted continued to move toward traffic and became more violent by grabbing on to the officers, Fair said.
Whitted then grabbed on to Kov’s straight baton and refused to let go, ripping the baton in its holder from the officer’s duty belt, Fair said.
When Whitted refused officers’ orders to drop the baton, Kov deployed his conducted energy device, or taser, which caused Whitted to drop the baton, according to the report.
He resisted arrest, so Mancuso pepper-sprayed him.
Whitted continued to struggle before finally surrendering, Fair said.
Whitted was transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus for evaluation.
After his release from the hospital, he was jailed on charges of disarming a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
That adds to the previous charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, for which he had been released on a summons.
