An Atlantic City man was arrested Friday after he allegedly assaulted a police officers and an emergency medical technician trying to assist him.
Officers Ryan Kov and Bryan O’Neill were called to Michigan and Pacific avenues at 9:35 p.m., after a 911 caller said a man had been sitting in the middle of the road, Atlantic City Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
The caller said Jalial Whitted had moved to the sidewalk but appeared disoriented.
When the officers found him, he began to scream and growl at them, and was under the influence of narcotics, according to the report. They called an ambulance for medical attention, and the officers tried to calm Whitted, who they believed was a danger to himself and others, Fair said.
Whitted started to walk away while continuing to scream and growl, Fair said.
When they tried to stop him, Whitted grabbed O'Neill and pushed him back, but Kov was able to free O'Neill from Whitted's grasp, Fair said.
He resisted as the officers tried to place him in custody, according to the report. It took several officers to handcuff him.
When the ambulance arrived, officers and EMTs tried to put Whitted on a stretcher when he grabbed the shirt of an EMT and refused to let go. He was eventually removed, but not before tearing the EMT’s uniform, Fair said.
Whitted was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus, where he was treated for being under the influence of narcotics. He was not injured during the arrest, Fair said.
O’Neill was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for an injury sustained during the arrest. Both were later released.
Whitted, 33, is charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
He was released on a summons.
