An Atlantic City man set to be sentenced on burglary charges next month was arrested Monday for assaulting and robbing a woman.
Alexander Olaik was arrested after he returned to the area where the crime happened, police said.
Officers were called to Brighton and Atlantic avenues just after 1 p.m. for the report of a theft, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
A 50-year-old city resident told Officer Eilene Shur that she was waiting for the bus when a man pushed her and grabbed her cell phone, according to the report. The man also tried to steal her purse, but she was able to fight him off.
But when the man ran off, the woman chased him. He then stopped, assaulted her and stole the purse.
Surveillance center personnel started to review camera footage of the area and found where Olaik fled, Fair said.
They continued reviewing footage to see where he went, but every time officers got to a certain spot, Olaik was already gone.
Then, just before 3 p.m., Officers Ryan Waddell and Aaron Jones — who had searched two casinos looking for Olaik — found him at California and Atlantic avenues, a few blocks from the attack.
Olaik, 24, is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on charges of robbery and theft.
He was set to be sentenced Feb. 21 on two counts of burglary in an old case, court records show.
