A Mays Landing man was arrested after rear-ended a Hamilton Township police car, then fled by going the wrong way down 322.
Sgt. Chris Robell, with his K-9 partner in his car, was stopped a red light on Route 50 at the Route 322 overpass just before 9 a.m. Thursday, police said.
He was struck from behind by a red PT Cruiser driven Damon Zeak, according to the report.
Zeak, 25, then drove the wrong way down the Route 322 off ramp, and continued going west in the eastbound lanes before shifting over into the westbound lane, police said.
He continued to refuse to pull over for marked cars, then turned onto Elwood Road, where his vehicle became disabled.
Zeak, and his passenger, 19-year-old Elizabeth Workman, also of Mays Landing, then tried to flee on foot before officers caught them.
Zeak is jailed on charges of eluding, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on police and assault by auto.
The picture of him after his arrest shows his right eye swollen shut.
Zeak also faces multiple motor vehicle violations, including driving under the influence.
He was sentenced to 364 days in county jail last year for a credit card theft dating to 2016, court records show. He also has prior arrests that include drug and burglary charges.
Workman was charged with eluding and possession of a hypodermic needle. Her charges were placed on summonses, but she was still jailed on an unrelated warrant.
Robell was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Pomona, where he was treated and released. His partner, Kota, also suffered minor injuries in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Hamilton Township police at 609-625-2700.
