An Atlantic City man was arrested Monday, after he attacked a child while naked, city police said.
Video taken through an open window at Carver Hall is making the rounds on social media, showing the man walking around without any clothes on.
Stephon Whitfield, 28, was believed to be under the influence of some kind of drug, according to the report.
He has a history of drug charges, including a 2017 case for possession of PCP, or
phencyclidine, to which he pleaded guilty. He was given a suspended sentence last year, court records show.
Many who saw him said Whitfield had likely smoked wok, which is a marijuana cigarette usually dipped in
PCP. Those on it often strip off their clothing.
Whitfield first tried get into a man’s vehicle and steal his money, but was pushed away, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
That's when the video seems to start.
“Call them. Call them. Call the cops please,” says a woman taking the video Monday night.
“Don’t call the cops,” someone else says.
The mood changes however when the man bends down over a baby carriage with a 9-month-old boy inside.
The mother can be heard screaming.
"Oh my God!” the woman videoing yells several times. “Help! Help! Lock him up!”
The woman then says, “Oh my God, he’s hitting that lady’s baby.”
Another video posted to YouTube shows more of the attack, with the baby stroller being toppled as the man refuses to let go.
It is titled, "Atlantic City man bite baby lip off," although the baby was not bitten.
Officers were called to the 1300 block of Caspian Avenue for a report of a naked man beating at the front door to the apartment building, Fair said. Responding officers were told the man had assaulted an infant.
Police arrived to find Whitfield naked, yelling and bleeding, according to the report.
The baby’s injuries were not life-threatening, Fair said.
The baby was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus for treatment.
Officers Armani Rex and Malik Tolbert arrested Whitfield without incident, Fair said.
Whitfield was taken to the medical center for evaluation, before being brought to the Atlantic County Justice Facility Tuesday morning.
His mugshot showed him with his left eye swollen shut and bloodied, with his upper lip appearing to be swollen.
The man is shown being attacked as the group tries to get him off the baby. A man then comes along and appears to kick and punch Whitfield.
"God knows that I didn't want to be woken up with my child all over Facebook," Whitfield's mother posted Tuesday morning.
Whitfield is charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and disorderly conduct.
