A burglary suspect's claims that his two accomplices fled led to the lockdown of the Brigantine Community School on Monday afternoon.
Kevin V. Scott, 35, was arrested after leaving a residence at 11th Street and Jenkins Parkway, where police were called for a burglary in progress around 1 p.m., Detective Sgt. Jack Glasser said.
Officer Benjamin Stambaugh ordered the suspect to stop, but Scott fled and was arrested nearby after resisting arrest, according to the report.
Responding officers found evidence of forced entry at the home, Glasser said.
Scott first gave a fake name and told police he had two accomplices who fled south across the golf course.
Because the information could not be immediately confirmed, the nearby Brigantine Community School was put on lockdown, Glasser said.
Brigantine police along with K-9 units from Egg Harbor Township's and Pleasantville's police department did a search, but found no other suspects.
Investigators are still trying to determine whether there were other men involved, Glasser said.
They are checking video surveillance in the area and encourage any residents with cameras there to check their footage.
Scott was determined to have forced entry into the unoccupied dwelling with intent to commit theft. He also was found with 70 grams of suspected methamphetamine along with suspected heroin and prescription pills, according to the charges.
Scott, who lives in Salisbury, Md., also has been identified as the suspect in Nov. 11 burglaries in the area of Fownes Avenue and East Shore Drive, Glasser said. Some of the items belonging to victims in those cases have been recovered. Charges are pending.
He also had multiple warrants out of other jurisdictions.
Scott is charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, theft, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, hindering apprehension by giving false information to police, second-degree possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, third-degree possession of heroin with intent to distribution, possession within a school zone, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of prescription legend drugs.
He is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting a detention hearing.
