An Atlantic City police detective disarmed a suspect during a struggle inside the Walgreens.
Detective Anthony Abrams saw the man discard an object determined to be cocaine before entering the Walgreens at about 9:17 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Pennsylvania and Atlantic avenues, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.
Abrams and Detective Jaimee Moore, who were working a traffic detail in the area, followed him inside, according to the report.
Jamil Hunter, 33, was told he was being arrested for cocaine possession, and tried to run, Aristizabal said.
The officers then struggled to place him in custody, according to the report.
During the struggle, Moore saw the butt of a handgun protruding from Hunter’s waistband, Aristizabal said. She quickly removed it before the detectives placed Hunter in custody.
The handgun was fully loaded, Aristizabal said.
Hunter has previously served time on drug and weapons charges.
The Atlantic City man is now charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain persons not to possess a weapon, resisting arrest, obstruction, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and aggravated assault on a police officer.
Hunter is currently in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting a detention hearing.
