Atlantic City police sergeant charged in drunken-driving crash

An Atlantic City police sergeant has been charged with driving under the influence after a crash in Ventnor on Sunday morning.

Michael Camp, a 20-year veteran of the department, was driving on Atlantic Avenue, when he rear-ended a vehicle driven by 36-year-old Sean Devitt, of Danville, Pa.Devitt was stopped at the light at Jackson Avenue, police said.

No one was injured and there was minor damage, according to the report.

Atlantic City police were first called to the scene, because the vehicles ended up on that side of the border, police said. But it was then determined that the crash happened on the Ventnor side.

Camp, 44, of Atlantic City, was taken into custody and later released to a friend.

In addition to driving while intoxicated, he was charged with reckless driving. Camp's car was towed from the scene.

"It would be premature to comment at this time, as we are in the process of gathering the necessary information related to this incident," said Sgt. Kevin Fair, spokesman for the Atlantic City Police Department.

The crash was investigated by Sgt. Bryan Gaviria and Lt. Louis Kabo.
