Atlantic City officer talks shooting suspect out of home with children

A Trenton man was arrested after a standoff with police at an Atlantic City residence.

Police were first called to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus just after 7 p.m. Tuesday, after a 50-year-old city man walked into the emergency room with a gunshot wound, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.

Officers determined the shooting happened outside a residence in the 1600 block of Adriatic Avenue after an altercation inside, according to the report.

Officers Jesse Oliver-Logan and Anthony Nastasi saw Anthony Matthews on the front stoop of the home, Aristizabal said.

Matthews immediately ran back into the residence, a a perimeter was set up, Aristizabal said.

Officer Franco Sydnor, a crisis negotiator, made contact with Matthews and learned there were four young juveniles also inside, according to the report.

Sydnor was able to get Matthews to release the children, Aristizabal said.

Matthews was ultimately taken into custody without incident.

A search of the residence led to a Ruger handgun believed to have been used in the shooting, according to the charges.

Officers also found evidence of gunfire in the 300 block of North Kentucky Avenue, Aristizabal said.

Matthews is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, along with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and certain persons not to possess weapons.

Matthews is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting a detention hearing.
