Three Atlantic County residents were indicted for their alleged roles in the theft and unauthorized use of an Electronic Benefits Transfer card issued by the county Department of Family and Community Development.
Corie Pittman, 42, of Absecon, was working for the county agency when she allegedly gave a card with $1,100 on it to her sister, even though it was issued to someone else, according to the charges.
Kelly Pittman, 41, of Egg Harbor Township, tried to sell the card, but was unsuccessful, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office alleges.
Surveillance and billing records then show Kelly Pittman and Robert Swaggerty, 41, of Pleasantville, making several purchases at the Wal-Mart and ShopRite in Hamilton Township on June 4, 2022, the charges claim.
They left about $5 on the card, according to the charges.
The resident whose account the card was on received a card in the mail indicating there was $1,100 on it, but when she went to use it, found only the small amount remained, the state claims.
The resident reported the apparent theft to law enforcement who began an investigation.
Video from June 2, 2022, shows Corie Pittman processing the EBT card and placing it in an envelope before later returning with an empty envelope.
All three are now indicted on charges of second-degree conspiracy to commit official misconduct and third-degree theft. Corie Pittman has an additional charge of second-degree official misconduct.
The case was investigated by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards and Accountability Unit with cooperation from the Atlantic County Department of Family and Community Development.
All three were charged on summonses.
