Pleasantville man charged in wounding four in expressway shooting

  • News
A Pleasantville man has been charged with four counts of attempted murder in a shootout between two cars on the Atlantic City Expressway last year. Devan Leggette, 21, was allegedly driving a black Dodge Ram pickup truck, and was exchanging gunfire with a white Ford Expedition. A witness was heading east near milepost 11.2 when he heard gunshots and looked up to see smoke coming from the Dodge Ram, according to the charges. The Dodge and the Ford then exchanged gunfire. The witness followed the Dodge off at Exit 5, toward Pleasantville. He described the man to police and positively identified him from a photo lineup, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said. The Ford wound up at the Wawa on the Airport Circle with four people wounded inside: driver Shaun Stukes, his son Yahshaun Stukes-Williams, Lenardo Caro and a 16-year-old male who has not been identified. The three wounded men were all indicted this week on weapon charges, conspiracy and conspiring with a juvenile in the commission of a crime. Rosemund Octavius was found shot to death in a third car found on the Garden State Parkway. The driver, Anthony Hicks, told investigators the shooting happened on the expressway. No one in charged in that killing. Leggette was also the
victim of a shooting in Pleasantville a little more than two months later. He suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and right forearm in that shooting in the 800 block of Broad Street. Leggette was arrested Wednesday, the same day three of his alleged victims were indicted on weapons and conspiracy charges. He is due to have a detention hearing at 1:30 p.m. Monday before Superior Court Judge Donna Taylor to determine if he will be held until trial.
