A 16-year-old is dead and a 17-year-old charged with his killing inside an Egg Harbor Township home Friday.
Police were called to the home on Woodrow Avenue near Coolidge at 6:19 p.m., after a 911 call indicated a child fell down the stairs, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said. During the call, another individual got on the telephone and said there was a shooting.
Arriving officers found a 16-year-old boy dead of an apparent gunshot wound.
The Prosecutor's Office is not releasing the name of the victim.
An autopsy performed Saturday determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and it was ruled a homicide.
This is the second killing in two days in Atlantic County, which saw its first homicide of the year in a
Pleasantville shooting Thursday.
The 17-year-old is charged with aggravated manslaughter and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Due to his age, his name is not being released. He is being held at the Harborfields Youth Detention Facility.
Tyner's office can decide to have the unnamed defendant waived up to adult court. If that happens, he could still remain at Harborfields, unless the prosecutor successfully argues to move him to an adult facility.
Chief Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy is representing the state in the matter.
No other information will be available at this time.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit at 609-909-7666.
