An Atlantic City police officer heading home from work helped rescue an allegedly drunk driver from his smashed vehicle Saturday morning.Officer Mailon Demby was still in uniform when he came across the car crashed into the Atlantic City Expressway toll plaza around mile marker 17.7 in Egg Harbor City just after 5:30 a.m.Julius Davis was heading through the toll plaza when he ended up striking the concrete dividers, State Police Sgt. Lawrence Peele said.Davis was still in the smoking vehicle when Demby arrived.“I ran over and helped him get out of the smashed car, then made sure he didn’t have any immediate injuries,” Demby said.Davis didn’t know his name or where he was, Demby said. He didn’t have any major injuries but had some bleeding from cuts.Demby said he also instructed the two women working the booths on either side of the crashed vehicle to get out, and brought them to safety.He then kept traffic away until State Police arrived.When they did, Davis was sent to the hospital, Peele said.He was later charged with driving while intoxicated.The 31-year-old Woodbine man was given a summons.
