Two Absegami teens charged after Snapchat post raises safety concerns

  • News

Two 16-year-old boys are now charged with creating a false public alarm after social media post contained possible threats.
Galloway Township police were contacted at about 6:30 Thursday morning about posts that raised concerns over safety, police said.
Absegami Principal Jeri-Lynn Vernon sent a message to parents Thursday morning telling them that police boarded one school bus due to concern for student safety.
The 16-year-old who created the post was taken into custody, police said.
“All is well as Galloway Township Police were on site and completed a full safety check,” she wrote.
Police Chief Donna Higbee confirmed to BreakingAC that a Snapchat post sparked the concern.
“The case surrounds a social media post that was brought to our attention,” she said. “The matter was resolved prior to school this morning. There is no ongoing threat.”
“Getting ready for school tomorrow,” the teen posted with a photo of what appeared to be bullets and possible body armor of some type.
BreakingAC is not publishing the name on the Snapchat.
An investigation found that another 16-year-old student was involved, and he was arrested and taken from school, police said.
The teens were released to their parents pending juvenile court proceedings.
