When Trump Plaza is finally demolished early next year, it will end a long battle to get erase the former casino from Atlantic City's landscape.
But the mayor is also hoping it will also raise money for the city's Boys and Girls Club.
Marty Small got the idea to auction off the rights to push the button for the implosion, which is expected to happen some time in February.
Trump's legacy in Atlantic City, Small said, includes taking advantage of bankruptcy laws, taking advantage of some people, making money and leaving.
"So it's extremely important we do something worthwhile and there's not a better organization than the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City," he said.
The rights to do the countdown and push the button is already up for auction.
After 13 bids, the price stood at $62,500. But Small said, "I'm a pretty ambitious guy, I want to raise at least a million dollars."
In addition to bidding, people also can make separate donations straight to the Boys and Girls Club.
The pandemic has the club going beyond afterschool services, CEO Stephanie Koch said, noting they are now serving the full family.
"We are building the next generation of Atlantic City residents and its leaders," she said.
"It's been quite a process to get to this point," said Licensing & Inspections Director Dale Finch.
"Finally, this year, through Mayor Small's efforts, we did manage to break ground so to speak in getting the demolition accomplished" with pre-work starting in late May.
