A Margate man was allegedly drunk when he drove his car off Margate Boulevard into the water.
John Abbott, 36, was heard yelling for help at about 11:10 p.m. Thursday, Egg Harbor Township Lt. Robert Gray said.
Police found his car partially submerged and Abbott holding on to a bridge piling, according to the report.
Abbot as traveling east on the boulevard when he crossed into the westbound lane and then went off the road and into the water, Gray said.
The vehicle wound up under the Risley Channel Bridge, according to the report.
Margate firefighters got Abbott out of the water, and he was sent to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus for minor injuries.
He was issued summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain lane, failure to keep right and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
The boulevard was closed to traffic for about three hours while police investigated and the vehicle was removed from the water.
The Bargaintown Fire Company along with Margate and Northfield police assisted at the scene.
The crash is being investigated by Officer Patrick Daly of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit.
