Atlantic City man allegedly stabbed victim 42 times

  • News

An Atlantic City man accused of stabbing a man more than 30 times during a brawl outside a bar was ordered held in jail Monday.

Alejandro Navarette-Gonzalez, 24, is accused of attempted murder in the attack on Sean Williams who was already down on the ground when he was stabbed, according to the charges.

Williams, 31, suffered an estimated 42 stab wounds, Assistant Prosecutor Alyssa Gilby said.

Williams suffered wounds to his head, face, neck, torso, back and extremities, according to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC.

The fight allegedly started inside Los Compadres Restaurant at 2701 Arctic Ave. before 5 a.m. April 4. Police have not released anything publicly about the incident.

Video posted on Facebook has garnered attention, and shows the fight outside the bar, with several people involved and punches thrown.

That video along with surveillance from outside the bar is part of the evidence in the case.

A man whose identity is not yet known to law enforcement is seen repeatedly punching and kicking Williams while he is on the ground, the affidavit claims.

Navarette-Gonzalez "is seen on video holding a knife and charging toward the group, where he starts repeatedly stabbing (Williams) with a knife while (the victim) is on the ground," the affidavit states.

Defense attorney Stephen Funk argued that Navarette-Gonzalez has no adult record and was acting in self-defense.

"There is no reason to believe Mr. Gonzalez is particularly dangerous other than to the large group of people he got into fight with," Funk said.

But that he allegedly stabbed the victim more than 30 times in less than two minutes and then fled does not match with the self-defense claim, the assistant prosecutor said.

Funk also claimed "many others had knives," and that his client was also wounded.

Williams had to undergo emergency life-saving surgery, according to the claims made in court.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help with his medical expenses.
