Atlantic City police warn of targeted car thefts as teen arrested

  • News

Atlantic City police are warning Hyundai and Kia owners of thefts targeting their vehicles.

The makes are those that use a key to start the engine, Lt. Kevin Fair said.

A 15-year-old city boy was arrested Tuesday in the burglary of one Hyundai and the theft of another, Fair said.

Officers Ivaylo Ivanov and Jermaine Clay saw the teen who matched the description of a burglary suspect in the 600 block of Absecon Boulevard, according to the report.

The teen fled when officers tried to stop him, Fair said.

He eventually surrendered without incident.

Two other teens who also fled were released to their parents without charges, Fair said.

Officers found the stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex.

Those who own Hyundai or Kia vehicles can access free software meant to combat thefts, Fair said.

Owners are urged to contact Hyundai at 800-633-5151 or Kia at 800-333-4542 for information.

The teen, whose name was not released due to his age, is charged with two counts each of burglary and theft and criminal mischief, along with one count of obstruction of justice.

He was released into the custody of a guardian with a future court date.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Atlantic City Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit at 609-347-5766 or submit a text anonymously to tip411 (847411). Begin the text with ACPD.
