One driver suffered moderate injuries in an Egg Harbor Township that left an SUV engulfed in flames Tuesday afternoon.
Michael Corrado of Hammonton was driving on Woodrow Avenue when he stopped at the intersection at Washington Avenue, and then tried to make a left turn, Lt. Brian Keane said.
He drove his 2022 Ford Explorer into the path of a 2006 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer driven by Donald Parker Jr., of the township, according to the report.
The tractor struck the front driver's side wheel well of the SUV.
The initial collision caused the Explorer to spin and strike a metal drainage grate on the north side of the roadway, which caused the vehicle to catch fire, Keane said.
Fire personnel from Cardiff, Farmington and Bargaintown were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the truck, he said.
The other vehicle was spilling a large amount of fluid, which was cleaned up by Atlantic County Hazmat handled the spill.
Washington Avenue was closed in both directions for approximately two hours for investigation and cleanup.
Corrado had moderate injuries and was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus by township EMS.
Police confirmed to BreakingAC that there was ammunition in the SUV, but that it did not cause any issues.
The crash is being investigated by Officer Nathan Lahr of the Egg Harbor Township Traffic Safety Unit. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Egg Harbor Township Traffic Safety Unit at 609-926-2661.
