An Ocean City man is charged with murder after calling police and saying he killed his mother.
Jeffrey Surgent, 46, called police just before 4 p.m. Friday, saying he suffers from mental illness and that his mother was dead, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland and Ocean City Police Chief William Campbell said.
Police responded to the residence in the 300 block of Sixth Street, and found the 74-year-old woman's body, according to the report.
The manner of death was not released.
Surgent was taken into custody without incident.
He is charged with murder, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He is additionally charged with refusing to give fingerprints.
Surgent is in police custody in a secure medical facility, officials said.
The killing is being investigated by Ocean City police, the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the N.J. Southern Regional Medical Examiner's Office.
