A Millville police officer will not face criminal charges in the fatal shooting of a man last year, a grand jury decided last week.
Police first encountered Ackley holding a machete, according to the investigation.
Body camera footage shows him advancing toward the officers and refusing to comply with demands to drop the knife when Officer Timothy Rehmann shot Ackley in the stomach.
Officers and emergency medical personnel rendered first aid to Ackley, who was then airlifted to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:56 p.m.
A state grand jury voted against criminal charges after the presentation last week.
Ackley’s death was investigated by the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability and presented to the state grand jury in accordance with the 2019 Independent Prosecutor Directive.
In July 2021, OPIA issued standard operating procedures to ensure these presentations are conducted in a neutral, objective manner, with appropriate transparency regarding the process, consistent with the directive.
The investigation included interviews of witnesses, review of body-worn camera footage and autopsy results from the medical examiner.
Ackley was an Iraq War Army veteran, according to his obituary.
