Teens arrested, man injured in Absecon carjack attempt

  • News

Two Camden County teens were arrested after a man was injured during an attempted carjacking in Absecon on Friday.

The 57-year-old victim sitting in his vehicle reading a book by the Absecon Bulkhead/Faunce Landing Park when he was targeted, police said.

The situation escalated and the two teens forcibly removed the man from his vehicle and tried to get his car keys, according to the report.

The victim was able to thwart their efforts, but sustained injuries in the attack.

An investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division aided by surveillance footage led to a 14- and 17-year-old being arrested.

The teens are charged with first-degree carjacking and assault.

Both were ordered detained, BreakingAC has confirmed. The case is being transferred to Camden County, where the juveniles decide.

It was not immediately clear if a move would be made to have the 17-year-old waived up to adult court. The 14-year-old is not eligible for waiver, since the defendant must be at least 15 at the time of the offense.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Absecon police at 609-641-0667. Crimes may be anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 1-200-658-TIPS (8477) or text TIPCOP plus your tip to 274637 (CRIMES).
