An Atlantic City man previously charged in a deadly assault now faces new gun charges.
Isaiah Butler, 23, was driving in the 1900 block of Atlantic Avenue on Monday night when he was pulled over by Detective Aaron Jones, Capt. Kevin Fair said.
Jones saw items used in drug dealing in the backseat as he approached, according to the report.
A loaded gun was found in a bag in the backseat, Fair said.
Butler and his passenger, 22-year-old James Gallaway of Millville, were charged with weapons offenses.
Butler also faces a pending assault case from 2019, in which he and others beat a man sleeping on a bench on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
The incident was caught on surveillance video, and showed one of the suspect appear to be filming it on a cell phone, BreakingAC previously reported.
The case originally was charged only at the municipal level, until the victim reached out to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office that August, claiming he was suffering from worsening headaches and spinal bleeding from the assault.
By time the affidavit was signed Sept. 27, 2019, the unnamed victim was in a coma. He later died.
Butler was released at the time with weekly court check-ins. He also was to incur no additional charges.
He and Gallaway are now in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending detention hearings.
