A homeless man is dead after a three-alarm fire started under the Boardwalk near Central Pier in Atlantic City.
Firefighters were called to the area just after 7 p.m., Fire Chief Scott Evans said.
Bruce Eder, 67, whose last known residence was in the city, appeared to be sleeping, according to a release from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
But firefighters on scene told BreakingAC it appeared the man may have been trying to get out from his home under the wooden way.
Cause of death is pending an autopsy.
The fire started in multiple smaller buildings behind the pier, Evans previously said.
The heavy fire then spread to the main pier, along with the 99 cent store.
About 50 firefighters were on scene.
The fire still was not fully under control by 9 p.m., Evans said.
After midnight, the medical examiner van was seen loading a stretcher.
Firefighters from Ventnor, Absecon and Pleasantville responded to man the fire stations.
The arson unit is investigating.
