K-9s, drones help find patient missing from EHT nursing home

Two K-9 teams and drone surveillance helped track down a man missing from an Egg Harbor Township nursing facility.

Herschel Saylor, 90, was reported missing at about 10:50 p.m. Thursday from ExcelCare on Delilah Road, Capt. Michael Finnerty said.

The initial investigation found he was last seen on video surveillance exiting the facility just before 5 p.m., according to the report.

He was then tracked walking west along the side of the facility until he went out of view of the camera.

Officers on scene, with the assistance of ExcelCare Staff, began searching the facility and the immediate surroundings, Finnerty said.

Detectives and officers from the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Drone Unit and the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.

Egg Harbor Township Police K-9 Officer William Burns and his partner, Odin, along with Atlantic County Sheriff’s K-9 Officer Joseph Kleinow and his partner, Keeper, tracked to a heavily wooded thick brush area between two fences separating ExcelCare and Harrison Beverage.

With help from Drone Surveillance and both K-9s, township Officer Dominik Newman found Saylor about 1,000 feet into the brush between the Excel and Harrison Beverage, Finnerty said.

Saylor was carried out of the wooded area by patrol officers, and turned over to Egg Harbor Township EMS.

He was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries.
