Judge cuts years off plea in teen killer's sentencing

  • Crime-Courts

An Atlantic City man who admitted to gunning down a teen when he was a juvenile was sentenced to 12 years in prison this week.

Azair Wilson, now 19, faced 18 years in prison under an agreement that had him plead guilty to aggravated manslaughter in the killing on Father's Day 2023.

Judge Jorge Coombs instead sentenced him to the lesser term.

Tamaj Bennett, 18, was found with more than a dozen gunshot wounds by police were called to the 1400 block of Atlantic Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. June 18, 2023.

He was rushed to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Wilson, who was 17 at the time, was arrested July 3, 2023, at a residence in South Fulton, Ga., by members of the South Fulton Police Department, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said at the time.

Bennett was dropped off near a convenience store at 1406 Atlantic Ave., video surveillance showed. As he walked toward the store, he briefly acknowledged the males standing outside when Wilson fired a handgun at Bennett.

Bennett is seen running into the store with Wilson following and continuing to shoot Bennett multiple times.

Wilson remains in juvenile detention, so no mugshot was available.

He must serve 85 percent of his sentence under the No Early Release Act. With time served, that means he has about eight years and nine months remaining until he is eligible for parole.
