An Atlantic City man released from prison in March gave a fake name and refused to be fingerprinted after he was arrested with a gun and drugs, police said.
Julian Hinton was walking in the 1300 block of Atlantic Avenue just after 11 p.m. Thursday, when Officer Julian Monsalve noticed he matched the description of a suspect in a vehicle burglary, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
Hinton ignored the officer's orders to stop and eventually started running, according to the report.
The suspect tried to climb a chain-link fence, but was unsuccessful. Hinton was handcuffed despite allegedly trying to reach toward his waistband area for something.
After he was in custody, the officer found a loaded handgun under Hinton, Fair said.
Hinton also had five grams of cocaine, according to the charges.
He told the officer his name was Garnet Hinton and gave a birthdate showing him to be 34 years old, according to court records.
Eventually his true identity was determined, although he is still listed in some records as Garnet.
Hinton, who marked his 31st birthday Sunday in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, is accused of stealing a woman's purse out of her vehicle Wednesday in the area of Tennessee and Pacific avenues.
He is charged with several counts, including drug and weapons offenses, along with obstruction, hindering apprehension, resisting arrest, burglary and theft.
He had only been out of prison about three months at that time.
Hinton was sentenced to five years in that case, and was released from Northern State Prison on March 27 of last year.
He also had an outstanding warrant from Nov. 29, for aggravated assault on a domestic violence victim, court records show.
Both that and his current charge have him wanted on a warrant in the system because of the fake name. He was listed in the jail as Garnet Hinton.
