An Atlantic City man is jailed after he allegedly assaulted a woman and then refused to leave the residence in a standoff that blocked a city street for hours Sunday morning.
Police were called to the first block of North Raleigh Avenue just before 7 a.m. for the report of a woman being assaulted by her boyfriend and threatened with a handgun, Capt. Kevin Fair said.
The victim was located and had clear signs of injury, according to the report.
Jamal Bruce, 33, was armed and had his children in the residence, police were told.
Bruce refused to come out of the residence, prompting a response from the Police Department’s Emergency Response Team, Fair said.
The area was blocked from Ventnor Avenue as the scene unfolded. A heavy police presence included the city's armored BearCat vehicle.
Members of the department’s Crisis Negotiation Team called and spoke with Bruce, who ultimately surrendered to members of the SWAT team.
The children were not injured, Fair said.
The scene was cleared by about 10:30 a.m.
The victim was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus for treatment of her injuries.
Bruce is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting his hearing before a central judicial processing judge.
He is charged with aggravated assault on a domestic violence victim, terroristic threats, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Bruce is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting a detention hearing set for Wednesday.
