Detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a Cape May County man over the weekend.

Daquann Smith, 24, of Whitesboro, Middle Township, was shot at about 11 p.m. Friday.

He was found in the 300 block of Madison Avenue in Woodbine, authorities said.

The New Jersey State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, are gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and pursuing all available leads, according to a release from the Prosecutor's Office.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Daquann Smith,” county Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said. “Our office along with the New Jersey State Police is committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible for this senseless act are brought to justice.”

The community’s cooperation is vital in helping law enforcement build a complete understanding of the events that led to this tragedy, he said.

A candlelight vigil with balloon release will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Martin Luther King Center at 207 W. Main St. in Whitesboro. Attendees are asked to wear purple and white.

A GoFundMe also has been set up to help the family pay for funeral expenses.
