Several local ceremonies are planned for Wednesday, as the nation marks the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Atlantic City will honor the day at the memorial to two natives who were lost: the Saracini-O'Neill Memorial at Jackson Avenue and the Boardwalk.

The event begins at 10 a.m. and will include music from the Sandpipers Pipes & Drums of Atlantic County and a 40-ton, patriotic-themed sand sculpture by world-renowned artist John Gowdy.

Vincent Saracini, 51, was captain of Flight 175, which was the second plane to strike the World Trade Center, hitting the South Tower.

John O'Neill, 49, had recently retired from the FBI, where he had been the leading expert on Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, and has been recognized as the man who tried to warn of the dangers.

He had become the World Trade Center's director of security just weeks before the planes came.

In case of inclement weather, it will be moved inside to Town Hall.

Margate

The Margate City Fire Department will have a ceremony at 9 a.m. at Fire Station #1 located at Ventnor and Washington avenues.
