EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - A construction worker was killed Tuesday afternoon in a construction accident at the Club at Tilton on Hingston Road.
A roofing crew was cleaning up at about 3:10 p.m. after doing demolition/construction on the exterior of the Club at Tilton, Egg Harbor Township Police Capt. Cherie Burgan said.
Two units have staircases on the second floor that meet halfway down and merge into one staircase that goes to the ground level, Burgan explained.There is a concrete slab at the merge.
A 23-year-old man was underneath the slab cleaning up, when it fell on top of him, according to the report. The worker suffered severe internal injuries.
Township EMS and AtlantiCare Paramedics rushed him to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus in Atlantic City for emergency surgery, Burgan said.
The man died from his injuries. His name is not being released pending notification of next of kin.
A mother and her two children in one of the second-floor units was advised to stay inside until a ladder could evacuate them safely, Burgan said.
Members from the Bargaintown, Cardiff and Farmington Volunteer Fire companies responded to assist in the evacuation.
The building inspector responded to the scene. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified.
