An Atlantic City man released from prison in September is back in jail after he allegedly fired a gun into a deli in broad daylight.
No one was struck in the Feb. 13 shooting at the New York Grocery and Deli on New York Avenue.
Rakiy Newsome, 22, is accused of firing 10 rounds into the deli as he and another man walked down the street.
A deli employee told police he heard several shots and was struck by shattering glass before he ran for cover, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Allison Eiselen said. There were multiple patrons inside at the time.
A ShotSpotter alert captured 10 rounds fired at 1:17 p.m., according to Eiselen.
Video surveillance shows two men walking down the street, with one pulling out a handgun and extending his arm before a cloud of smoke is seen, consistent with the discharge of a firearm, according to the affidavit. The other male appears to crouch down and flee.
The video captured clear images of the shooter’s face, with law enforcement officers identifying him as Newsome, who then were familiar with from prior incidents, Eiselen said.
One of those prior incidents includes a 2022 arrest with a stolen gun after Newsome was stopped as a fugitive in a domestic violence case.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years with one year of parole ineligibility in 2023, on what is known as a Graves waiver, which removes the full mandatory minimum in gun cases.
Newsome was paroled Sept. 30, and completed his parole the next month, records show.
He was arrested on the latest case Feb. 22.
Newsome will now remain in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
