Mays Landing man pleads guilty to money laundering

  • Crime-Courts

A Mays Landing man pleaded guilty Friday to his part in a multimillion-dollar stolen check scheme.

Isaiah Edwards-Stewart, 32, admitted to orchestrating a scheme to move more than $75,000 but less than $100,000 over a period of three years.

He was arrested in June 2023, when the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office announced the results of an investigation that alleged Edwards-Stewart was involved in depositing stolen checks into different bank accounts belonging to other individuals and then transferring the money into his personal accounts at various financial institutions.

He and 35 others were named in a 120-count indictment that August. The indictment included charges of money laundering, forgery, computer crimes and identity theft.

Edwards-Stewart also admitted last week to a separate matter from 2019, in which he tried to fraudulently gain money by presenting himself as a victim.

He faces seven years in prison on one count each of money laundering and theft by deception. His sentencing is scheduled for April 29.

Judge Jeffrey Waldman released Edwards-Stewart pending sentencing, despite the state's objections.

He has served about one year and nine months in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

Multiple co-defendants' cases are still pending.
