Escaped Cumberland County Inmate Has History That Includes Kidnapping Conviction

  • News
An inmate who escaped custody in Cumberland County previously served time in a kidnapping and rape, records show. David D. Riley, 34, of Bridgeton, is considered armed and dangerous after he got out of his restraints while being transported in a Cumberland County Department of Corrections van Friday morning, State Police said. The man, who has pending robbery charges, fled on foot at about 10:30 a.m. in the area of Cornwell Drive and Old Deerfield Pike in Upper Deerfield Township, according to State Police. Riley has an extensive criminal record that spans four states, according to a 2009 news release from the U.S. Marshalls Service that announced his arrest in a case out of Gloucester County. Riley — also known as David Carter and David Banner — was accused of having a stolen car and then kidnapping a woman he had delivered furniture to a few days earlier, according to the release. He was accused of raping the woman repeatedly until she was able to escape in Maryland a few days later, the release said. Riley was arrested in Bybee, Tenn., after an investigation that included U.S. Marshals and detectives with the Camden Police Department. Riley was not indicted because he pleaded guilty to an accusation of kidnapping and was sentenced to six years in prison in 2010, court records show. He was to serve at least 85 percent of the sentence under the No Early Release Act. It was not clear when he got out of prison. Anyone who sees Riley is asked not to interact with him, but immediately call the New Jersey State Police Bridgeton Station at 856-451-0101.
