Atlantic City man fatally shot after leaving council president's home

  • Crime-Courts

An Atlantic City man who lost his son to gun violence was fatally shot after leaving a friend’s home early Sunday morning.

Demond Tally, 45, had just left City Council President Marty Small’s home on Presbyterian Avenue when gunshots rang out, the councilman told BreakingAC.

“He was one of my best friends,” said a visibly shaken Small.

The ShotSpotter alert came in at 5:13 a.m., Prosecutor Damon Tyner said in a release.

Tally's 21-year-old son, Demond Cottman, was killed outside the Hamilton Mall early Nov. 25, 2016, as shoppers gathered for Black Friday sales.

No arrests were ever made in that killing.

Atlantic City police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Fair confirmed there was a shooting and that the Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation. The office’s Major Crimes Unit handles all homicides.

Facebook was full of condolences for the victim and his family, who has suffered multiple losses to violence.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Major Crimes at 609-909-7666 or Atlantic City police at 609-347-5788. Information may also be texted anonymously to tip411 (847411) beginning the text with ACPD.
